The Universal Pictures slate for 2020 is a mixed bag that has begun with mixed results. Sam Mendes’ 1917 is a monumental success set to make a splash at the 2019 Oscars (confusing…but some 2020 movies produced at the beginning of the year are eligible for last year’s awards) while the Robert Downey Jr. headliner, Dolittle, was a monumental failure at the box office. Not to fret though, the studio’s big summer tentpole and extremely profitable Fast & Furious franchise will bow the ninth installment this May. Vroom vroom! If big action isn’t your bag, perhaps horror fans will delight in the announcement of five genre films this year in The Turning, The Invisible Man, Candyman, The Purge 5 and Halloween Kills. Universal isn’t leaving the kids behind with a trio of sequels in Trolls World Tour, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and The Croods 2. Universal will also make an appearance at this year’s SXSW Film Festival with Judd Apatow and Pete Davidson’s semi-autobiographical comedy The King of Staten Island.
