This year’s Oscars nominations offered the usual shock and awe, but none more surprising than Todd Philips’ Joker racking up the most nominations at 11. Scarlett Johansson received dual acting nominations, Leading Actress for Marriage Story and Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit. Joaquin Phoenix, fresh off his Globes victory was nominated for Leading Actor this year. Willem Dafoe was snubbed for Supporting Actor for his work in The Lighthouse, and Jennifer Lopez did not receive any love for Hustlers. Despite criticism (and promises) in year’s past, the Academy failed to nominate any women to the Best Director category. The acting categories as well, only produced two persons of color in Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory and Cynthia Erivo for Harriet.

This year’s Academy Awards will air February 9th on ABC.
